Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of nervousness, worry, or unease. It’s a normal reaction to situations that have unknown outcomes. For most people, these feelings of fear and worry disappear once the anxiety-provoking situation ends.

However, some people experience ongoing feelings of anxiety in everyday situations. When your anxiety causes debilitating, life-altering symptoms, you may have an anxiety disorder.

The team at Schwartz Medical Group specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety and can provide the care you need.

What are types of anxiety disorders?

There are many types of anxiety disorders, with varying triggers and symptoms.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

With GAD, you have excessive fear and worry about any number of concerns — such as health, work, and school — that affect you on a daily basis for six or more months. The fear and anxiety may be debilitating and affect your work and relationships.

Anxiety due to a medical condition

Anxiety due to a medical condition causes excessive fear and worry about a health issue. Seeing a need to ease anxiety in their long-term care patients, Schwartz Medical Group offers bedside testing so patients don’t have to travel to unfamiliar facilities or offices.

Social anxiety disorder

Social anxiety disorder is avoidance of social situations due to fear of embarrassment or concerns of being judged.

Panic disorder

A panic disorder is a type of anxiety that causes frequent panic attacks. A panic attack causes physical symptoms such as chest pain, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, and sweating. These terrifying symptoms usually last only a few minutes.

How are anxiety disorders diagnosed?

When you have debilitating anxiety, your primary care provider at Schwartz Medical Group conducts a comprehensive exam to diagnose your condition.

During your appointment, your provider asks detailed questions about your symptoms, when they started, and situations that make them worse. They also review your medical and family histories and conduct a physical and psychological exam.

Your provider may also request lab work, which they do in-house, to screen for medical conditions that may explain your symptoms.

How is anxiety treated?

The team at Schwartz Medical Group develops individualized treatment plans for anxiety based on the severity of your symptoms. Your treatment plan may include anti-anxiety medication and a referral to a therapist to help you manage your anxiety.

Schwartz Medical Group participates in the Medical Use of Marijuana Program for the state of Massachusetts. Your provider may also certify you for use of medical marijuana to treat your debilitating anxiety symptoms.

Don’t let your anxiety keep you from living your life. Call Schwartz Medical Group or book an appointment online today to get the help you need.
